Michael and his angels fought against the dragon
and his angels.
This drawn for my friend Michael, last year August of 2024. A small icon, slightly larger than my palm. It took me over a week to finish if I remember correctly. It might have been slightly rushed to meet my deadline.
It is a rough copy of 15th century work by Andreas Ritzos, one the founding fathers of the Cretan style. A true master of the craft.
The original looks much more lively. you can see despite having a certain elements that are fixed tradition, within those boundaries there very subtle touches that makes one icon shine far above others. This icon is one such case.
After reflecting I noticed my drawing suffers from a lack of layering and blending.
- Without layers of highlight, the drawing feels flat.
- The rough blending fragments the form into multiple surfaces.
I will take time to study it.

Unworthy as I am, I cry:
Holy Archangel Michael! Deliver us from all harm,
for you are the commander of the powers on high!
